Ankylosing Spondylitis - Pain Relief

By James Hunaban

There I was, aged 34, having had hardly a day's illness in my life, when I suddenly experienced severe pains in my neck and lower back. Just a glitch, thought I, get some heat treatment cream and that will fix it. Wrong! So I go and pay a rare visit to my doctor and he says I have Ankylosing Spondylitis. I did not think much of it at the time but it turned out to be a life changing diagnosis.

Ankylosing Spondylitis for those that do not know is one of the many strains of arthritis and can affect both men and women. I did not take it too seriously as I was still able to go about my daily business and I associated arthritis with being crippled up and having deformed hands etc. It shows how ignorant I was at that time in regards to rheumatic or arthritic ailments.

So my doctor prescribes some pills, which in all honesty were not much use and I go back to said doctor and he prescribes some different pills, again not much use. This goes on for several years, some pills being better than others, but none of them really killing the pain. Then, after suffering varying degrees of pain for about 15 years I finally found something which is a better painkiller for my ailment than any drug.

Enter the Tens Machine:
These machines come in various models, but they all work by emitting small electrical pulses of adjustable intensity through pads placed on the body which reduce the pain signals being sent to the brain. These electrical pulses also increase the production of the body’s natural painkillers called endorphins.

The tens machine model I have was fairly cheap to buy, and is cheap to run. The main cost, being the replacement of the pads as they only have a finite life. Okay, so it's not a cure, but if it masks the pain and helps me sleep at night, I’m happy. These machines, apparently, can provide relief for all sorts of muscular and joint pain. I cannot guarantee that it will work for your particular ailment, but it is definitely worth a shot. I wish I had discovered Tens Machines years ago. As always, consult your doctor before using one of these machines.
